About Al

Music has always been a passion, but alongside that my interest in all things mechanical has burned just as brightly. Over the years I have restored and maintained several classic cars and motorcycles and the knowledge gained from constant tinkering with such things has proved invaluable with Oboe repairs on an engineering level. I am very fortunate to have been brought up in a family where artistic and engineering merit lived side by side. Because of that and natural curiosity I started to repair and service my own instruments almost from the point I started playing aged 11.

IMAGE OF ALASTERYes, mistakes were made but none serious, so by the time I started full time work in the music profession, I was being approached by colleagues and friends to work on their instruments.

Having been with the Birmingham Royal Ballet for over 30 years, I feel that now is a good time to take my affinity with repairing oboes a step further and offer a more comprehensive, swift and affordable service. Above all, I am a working oboist so am well placed to offer a truly sympathetic approach to the business of tuning, having purchased a set of reamers and under cutters specifically for that purpose.

For tenon repairs and other instances needing rotation I have a Myford Super Seven Lathe. All my tools have been purchased and accumulated by experience over several years. I have built my own workshop at the end of the garden which has excellent lighting and power, plus the home comforts of comfortable chairs and heating, an ideal place to spend getting that elusive tuning problem sorted out. It also means that my overheads are kept to a minimum plus I do not charge VAT.
